What Type of Guitar Should I Use?
Guitar size and "playability" are important considerations when selecting an instrument. A correctly sized guitar and string type will make learning and playing the guitar more satisfying and enjoyable, especially for young players. A 3/4 or full-size classical guitar with nylon strings works well for elementary and middle school-aged students. (Nylon strings are softer to press than steel strings. Also, a 3/4 or full-size classical guitar has a body shape more comfortable for sitting and playing.) For adults, either nylon or steel-string guitars are fine. Electric guitars are another option. The strings require less pressure to press down than acoustic steel-string guitars; however, you will need an amplifier, which can be an added expense.
